What are the top down
Grand Theft Auto games or what we refer to as "Old Skool" Grand Theft
Auto games? Well they were the first games to be released in the now
famous Grand Theft Auto series. "Grand Theft Auto", now commonly
referred to as "GTA 1" or "Grand Theft Auto 1" was the first game in the
Grand Theft Auto series, released for the Playstation (one) and PC back
in 1997. The game didn't feature a real sense of a storyline, the
game-play was slightly off-par and the style was ordinary for the time,
especially when other games then were using 3D graphic/physics engines;
the game did feature though, a new style of open ended game-play. The
games buildings are in true 3D. Another-words, if the game where in a
third person perspective, the buildings would appear as if they would in
real life. Other objects such as cars, pedestrians and your character
are sprites, which are 2D images.
In 1999, an
expansion pack to the original Grand Theft Auto was released for the
Playstation and PC. The expansion was entitled "Grand Theft Auto:
Mission Pack #1: London 1969" which is commonly referred to as just
"London 1969". The game uses the same engine as the original Grand Theft
Auto with similar looking cut-scenes, missions and characters. The
expansion offers over 32 new missions and 30 brand new vehicles relative
to the time period. A spin-off was later released entitled "London
1961" exclusive to the PC and requires London 1969 which in-turn,
requires the original Grand Theft Auto. It is available from Rockstar
Games as a free
download.
Grand Theft Auto 2 was
the second main game in the Grand Theft Auto series. While still
retaining the same top-down perspective as the original, Grand Theft
Auto 2 offers more in the way of features. Some of the new
features/improvements include:
Gangs and
respect.
More cleaner look.
The
main character follows a storyline - as he moves his way up on the
criminal ladder.
Grand Theft Auto 2 is now offered
as a free download along with the original Grand Theft Auto game on the
Rockstar
Classics page.
"Grand Theft
Auto" commonly known as "Grand Theft Auto: Advance" was released for the
Game Boy Advance on October 25, 2004. The game makes a return to Grand
Theft Auto III's rendition of Liberty City, but in a 2D, top-down
environment. The game is set one year prior to the events of Grand Theft
Auto III and features a new storyline as well as new and returning
characters.
